We’re thrilled to share that the Buddy Room at Howard of Effingham School continues to make a meaningful difference to the wellbeing of pupils.
Designed as a safe, calm, and supportive space, the Buddy Room is there for students who may be experiencing emotional challenges, struggling to cope in class Over the past academic year, an incredible 244 students accessed the Buddy Room for at least one session.
It has also proven especially valuable for pupils experiencing Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA), offering a gentle, non-judgmental stepping stone back into school life and helping to rebuild trust, routine, and confidence.
The ways in which students use the space are as varied as their individual needs. Some pop in for a quick reset perhaps before school starts or at breaktime, while others rely on more regular support, with some attending 8–10 times per week. The Buddy Room provides a space to self-regulate, manage anxiety, or take time out during times of stress or upheaval
A particularly positive outcome has been the development of new friendships and peer support networks. Many students who may have previously felt isolated or disconnected have found a sense of belonging and connection through the shared experience of using the Buddy Room.
For students with neurodiverse conditions, it offers a consistent and understanding environment to help manage their day. For others, it’s a vital safety net during challenging periods when the demands of school feel overwhelming.
We’re proud to see the impact this space is having and grateful to the school staff for their continued support in making it work so effectively.
